Important Men’s Health Topics In Your 20’s, 50’s, and Beyond
Testicular Cancer
It is estimated that 8,000 to 10,000 men will develop testicular cancer each year. The chance of developing testicular cancer is about one in 270.
Fortunately, the cure rate is excellent – greater than 95 percent, but only if it is diagnosed and treated.
Younger men between 20-34 are at the highest risk for testicular cancer, but it can occur at any age.
Early diagnosis is possible with regular annual physical exams with your provider and at home self-testicular exams. Feeling for lumps and bumps is easy, and it can easily be done in the shower once a month to make sure “the boys” are doing well. If you do feel something of concern, reach out to a provider who will discuss it with you and set up a treatment plan that is appropriate for you.
Prostate Problems
As men age, prostate issues can develop.
A common problem is enlargement of the prostate, causing problems with urination. Prostate cancer is also a concern.
5 Common warning signs of prostate cancer:
- Pain and/or a “burning sensation” when urinating or ejaculating
- Frequent urination, especially during the nighttime
- Trouble starting urination, or stopping urination once in progress
- Sudden erectile dysfunction
- Blood in either urine or semen
Having a discussion with your provider can help determine if that is what is going on and the best way to manage this.
A simple blood test can help monitor and track the enlargement of your prostate to help catch any signs of cancer early, as well as yearly prostate checks at your annual physical.
ED…and We Don’t Mean the Emergency Department
Do you have problems getting an erection or maintaining an erection? Does this cause you to have a lower sexual drive than your partner?
A lot of things can cause erectile dysfunction. Low testosterone is a common cause, but it is not the only one! A series of blood tests can help determine if low testosterone is the cause, but some other things to consider are blood pressure issues, diabetes, and even prostate issues.
Some mental issues can cause low sex drive and decreased erections. Even some medications can cause this!
How do you start talking about this? Talking with a provider about the issue is step one. Erectile Dysfunction is not an “old guy” problem…it is a GUY problem! Any guy can have these types of issues, and working with a medical provider can help you get back in the game.
By having regular visits with your provider, getting screening lab work and doing at home self exams you can stay healthy and prevent a lot of these issues.
